The Final Makeover

Posted by on Aug 6, 2007 in Neighborhood, Youth Outreach | 0 comments

Our new next-door neighbor, RISEGO, is putting the finishing touches on the development of a Social Entrepreneurship Center in the city of Rochester. The center will help young entrepreneurs create businesses that address problems in their community and avoid the pitfalls of selling drugs and other negative behaviors. The site will feature four new businesses that model how entrepreneurs create wealth the right way. Social Entrepreneurial classes will be beginning in mid-September, so they need your help during the days outlined below. RISEGO...

GFM Looks to NE Neighborhood

For some months, Grace Family Medicine has been working together with Joy Community Church to help open a second office in the Gerhardt Ministry Center (GMC) on the corner of Bay and Goodman Streets in Rochester’s NE side. Plans have been drawn up to convert an empty storefront in their multi-ministry building into a modern clinical office space with construction expected to begin this summer. When the facility is complete, Ali Reeves is planning to move in and begin offering her services under our supervision, hopefully early this...

Famous Airplay jugglers, Wes and Jeff Peden, are coming to our Block Party for a special performance this Saturday, August 4th, at 1 pm. This is a show you and your kids won’t want to miss! Today’s Democrat & Chronicle published a marvelous story about Wes and his dad in today’s edition that starts out: When he was 5, Wes Peden was already juggling three balls. “At first, I did it to impress my dad,” says Wes, 17, of Rochester. His dad, Jeff Peden, has been juggling since elementary school. “I would...

This year’s Block Party, being hosted by the Arnett Block Association in our parking lot on August 4th from Noon to 4 pm, is shaping up to be an extravaganza! We got the tipoff when we applied to the City to close 2 blocks of Arnett Blvd. for the afternoon (YES, the street will be closed off!) “What you’re describing is more like a festival than a block party,” we were told. After our Neighborhood Bible Club Monday ends on Friday (see below), here’s what’s on the schedule for Saturday: * Free food, hot...

Greetings from BT

BT writes from Jerusalem: Recently a new crisis has erupted as the Lebanese army has been battling an extremist militant group operating from a Palestinian refugee camp. As I write the conflict continues and details of the origins and consequences are not yet clear. There have been more bombings in various neighbourhoods that have shaken the residents. In September the government must elect a new president but unless the political impasse is resolved this will be very problematic. With these and many other problems, the reports I read about...

Willie in “about…time”

Posted by on Jun 15, 2007 in Community | 0 comments

In the most recent issue of “about…time” magazine, our very own Willie Lightfoot was featured in a delightful cover article about his role in the community as a barber at New Creations Unisex Barbershop. He is quoted: “New Creations is tailored after the expression that when you come into Christ you are a new creature: old things are passed away ~ behold all things are created new,” explains Lightfoot. “We are a Christian shop. Anybody should be able to walk in here and get respect and feel comfortable. Our...

In RYO’s Spring newsletter, Jessica and Greg report: What a whirlwind this year has been! It seems as though we just began our friendships with the young people we see each Thursday. With the conclusion of both the Elim Bible Institute and Roberts Wesleyan College academic calendars, our outreach also concluded for the summer. The end of the year was definitely full of challenges! Taking finals, preparing for a trip to the Philippines, attending medical school interviews, working part time, and moving to a new house kept Greg on his...
