One of the Pharisees tested Jesus with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22.35-39
The Arnett Block Association
This group of community volunteers, which meets in our community conference room and is funded and networked through His Branches, works collaboratively with concerned neighbors, police officers, building inspectors, and other local agencies in the 19th Ward area near Arnett Blvd. to improve the safety of our streets and develop a greater sense of community. We seek to:
- network with citizens and community support agencies seeking common solutions to neighborhood problems like drugs, gangs, violence, dishonest businesses, landlords, litter, graffiti, etc.
- connect with community services and agencies in constructive ways.
- develop positive community-building projects and events.
Friends of the Arnett Library
Community members of the Block Association have teamed together with Arnett Branch Library staff and volunteers to promote a number of ongoing events that help sustain the community viability of this vital neighborhood resource. A group has emerged, organized as the Friends of the Arnett Library, which meets regularly to continue current activities and develop new ones. This is a “first” for a branch library in Rochester’s inner city and hopefully will serve as a model for other neighborhood libraries that want more community involvement. Past and current activities include:
- Children’s story time
- Community music events
- LEGO Club
- Renovation projects
- Kids’s events in the Garden Park
