Rochester Police Holding Gun Buyback
Chief Ciminelli asked us to announce the Rochester Police Department’s Gun Buy Back Program. The buy-back will take place on Saturday, November 7th, at the Miracle Deliverance Faith Center on Whitney Street just off the Child Street Exit from Route 490 in Rochester’s Southeast neighborhood. Mayor Lovely A. Warren, City Council President Loretta C. Scott and Police Chief Michael Ciminelli announced today that the Rochester Police Department will hold an anonymous Gun Buyback event next month to remove more illegal guns from the streets and keep legal guns from falling into the hands of criminals. The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Miracle Deliverance Faith Center, 69 Whitney St.
“The Gun Buyback is one more tool in our comprehensive strategy to confront the challenge of illegal guns so we can create safer, more vibrant neighborhoods, more jobs and provide all of our children with a quality education,” said Mayor Warren. “Illegal guns are causing havoc in our city and we will exhaust every possible resource to remove them from our streets. I want to thank Wegmans, the Rochester Police Foundation and the congregation of Miracle Deliverance Faith Center for supporting this important event.”
“Gun violence has plagued our city, and as a community we need to do everything we can to change that,” said City Council President Scott. “I encourage residents to participate in this anonymous Gun Buyback event so that together we can make streets safer throughout our neighborhoods.”
Combined with other initiatives including the Mayor’s successful advocacy to have a Gun Court established in Hall of Justice and her collaboration with other New York mayors to develop statewide solutions to gun violence, the Gun Buyback program is another component of Rochester’s commitment to reducing firearms violence. It provides an outlet and incentive for people to safely and legally dispose of unwanted firearms and eliminates the chance that the surrendered guns will end up in the hands of criminals. It also creates an opportunity for members of the community to have open and frank discussions about the role of illegal guns in violent crime.
The Gun Buyback event will give residents an opportunity to anonymously exchange an operable handgun or assault rifle for a $100 Wegmans gift card and an operable long gun for a $50 gift card, with a limit of $300 in cards per person.
