Easter Eggs in the Park

We had a great turnout and fun time again this year preparing, hiding, and letting kids find and gather Easter eggs in the neighborhood park down the street. Rora spent spare moments throughout the year finding special sales on Easter baskets and brightly colored plastic eggs just waiting to be filled with candies. Then neighbors who have been helping maintain the Bird & Butterfly Garden on the corner of Wellington Ave. and Arnett Blvd. all year long gathered to share a meal together, plan for spring planting, and stuff eggs with candies they had brought. When the day arrived (predicted...

Winter Update

The Arnett Block Association has been active this winter! Thanks to your generosity we were able to provide warm jackets, gloves and hats to needy children at School #29. About 300 children walked to the Arnett Bird & Butterfly Park with handmade ornaments for our 15-foot community Christmas tree. Later in December, we also hosted a well-attended caroling event around the tree with hot cocoa, popcorn and Christmas Nativity coloring books for the kids. This winter we’ve helped organize a Music Series at the Arnett Library with music students from Eastman and other local talent – a great...

St. Nicholas and Santa Claus

It’s been a long journey from the Fourth Century Bishop of Myra, St. Nicholas, who showed his devotion to God in extraordinary kindness and generosity to those in need, to America’s jolly Santa Claus, whose largesse often supplies luxuries to the affluent. However, if you peel back the accretions, he is still Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, whose caring surprises continue to model true giving and faithfulness. There is growing interest in reclaiming the original saint in the United States to help restore a spiritual dimension to this festive time. For indeed, St. Nicholas, lover of the...

Wonderful Block Party!

This year’s Arnett Block Party was a wonderful success, thanks to our gracious God who held the weather so marvelously for us and to the many community volunteers, agencies, and performers who put so much into the day. Starting with Matt Doward and his Horses’ Friend crew and carrying through a visit from our favorite police dog, Child ID, face painting, free food, firefighters and their truck, an ambulance, contests and prizes, the ZooMobile, bike repairs, hoop contests, a fabulous clown show, music, free books and Story Time from the Arnett Library, and closing with a Gospel...

A Great Bike Clinic

It was supposed to rain on Saturday, but the Lord heard our prayers (and those of lots of neighborhood kids who wanted their bikes fixed) and sent sunshine streaming down on our Spring Bike Clinic! Dozens of kids, family members, and friends came from all directions in the neighborhood to sign up for our free bike raffle and get their own bikes in shape for the season. Then the wonderful crew of volunteer mechanics from R Community Bikes rolled in with their fully equipped truck, loaded with tools and parts and 15 DONATED BIKES and HELMETS for the raffle, and we were off! The afternoon was...
